The Bathroom Door-frame Hurts!

A thought hit me at 4:37 a.m. this morning- two thoughts actually.  The first thought was, "Man, why do I drink so much water at night?!"  I always tend to have this epiphany at around 3:00-4:00 in the morning.  I need to have it while I'm watching television the night before, but I pay the price deep in the evening.  As I stumbled through the darkness, I had another thought.  This one came to me as I neared the bathroom doorway in the pitch black.  Of course, I do not want to turn on any lights at this early hour and wake my lovely bride.  Instead, today I opted to smash my face squarely on the door-frame of the water closet.  I guess I figured that Renee would rather have her sleep than a good-looking husband.  The latter may be a lost cause at this point anyhow.

Oddly, this isn't the first time this has happened in the recent past.  Our laundry room has two doors incredibly close to each other that are both swinging as you leave the house.  I've spent more than a few stinging moments holding my face over the years after a strong one-two punch from those doors!  Now Bauer, our four-year-old, is even getting familiar with them.

When I woke up (at my regular time) this morning with a bump on my forehead in the shape of the bathroom door-frame, I began to think about the things we smash into in life.  Whether we are kids or adults, we often stumble through the dark and run into walls that we didn't expect to be there.  These walls can be related to a job loss, relationship struggle, financial crisis or overwhelming stress.  And the list could go on to name different walls for various people.  Each of us has a contrasting journey that God has sent us on that teaches us valuable life lessons.

When I hit a wall that gives me trouble, I first thank God that my problems are usually temporary.  Most circumstances of concern are often over before I realize it.  Not to mention, they usually end up being less painful than my worry had made them out to be!  Second, I am reminded of a verse from one of the Bible's most prominent books.  Psalm 23:4 says, "Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me."  No matter how thick the wall is, how dark the air is or how afraid I might be, the Lord knows my heart and He is with me.  He knows what is best for me and wants me to succeed.  Knowing that, I am excited to see what challenges lie ahead and how God matures me in the process!
